What to do When Someone Shows Signs Nearing Death

01

Changes in Breathing

The person’s breathing may become quick and shallow or slower and more laboured. Irregular breathing patterns, such as periods of apnoea (temporary cessation of breathing), may also occur.

02

Weakening Knees

As the body weakens, the person may find it difficult or impossible to bend their knees, leading to a noticeable change in mobility.

03

Facial Changes

The nose may appear bent, and the temples may appear sunken due to the natural processes of the body as it prepares for the end of life.

04

Skin Changes

The person’s skin may undergo noticeable changes. It may become paler or take on a greyish hue. Mottling or blotchiness of the skin may also occur, particularly in the extremities.

05

Altered Consciousness

Individuals nearing the end of life may experience periods of deep sleep or even fall into a coma. These periods of unconsciousness may become more prolonged, with less time spent awake and aware.

06

Decreased Interest in Food and Water

As the body’s systems slow down, the person may lose their appetite and refuse food and water. This is a natural part of the body’s transition towards the end of life.

exercise caution

It is essential to exercise caution and seek the advice of a medical professional should the intention arise to provide water for the consumption of the dying person, as this action may present a risk of choking.

Furthermore, it is highly recommended to engage in the recitation of the Qur’an during this critical juncture. The recitation of the Qur’an, with its spiritually uplifting verses, can serve as a source of solace and tranquillity for the individual nearing the end of life. It is therefore encouraged to recite the Qur’an in the presence of the dying person, fostering an atmosphere of serenity and peace.

Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Recite [Surat] Ya-Sin over the dying among you.” [Ahmad, Abu Dawud, lbn Majah].

This reminds the dying of the scenes of the Day of Resurrection.

It is also Sunnah to perform Talqin; to gently prompt and remind the dying person to utter “La llaha Illa Allah” (i.e. “There is no God but Allah”), in a bid to make this testimony of faith their final words. The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) stated: “Exhort those dying among you to utter: ‘La llaha Illa Allah” [Muslim]

The Messenger of Allah stated:

“Whoever’s final words are

‘La lllah Illa Allah’ will enter Jannah.”

[Ahmad]

Once the departing person utters these words, those present should avoid drawing the dying person into any other conversation
