What to do When a Muslim Dies
The proper observance of rites and customs for a deceased Muslim entails handling the body with utmost care and reverence. The following guidelines highlight the necessary procedures:
01
Closing the Eyes
It is advised to gently close the eyes of the deceased.
02
Adjusting the Chin
While supporting the head, the chin should be delicately lifted upwards. In cases where the mouth remains open, it may be necessary to place a strip of cotton under the chin and around the head, securely tying it at the top to ensure closure.
03
Removing Jewellery
All jewellery items, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, nose studs, and any piercings, should be removed from the deceased. It is particularly crucial to remove rings before any swelling occurs.
04
Straightening the Limbs
The limbs of the deceased should be carefully and gently straightened. If resistance is encountered, it is essential not to force the limbs, as the utmost respect is emphasised for the body of a Muslim, whether alive or deceased, and the risk of causing damage should be avoided.
It is important to note that cutting nails or removing unwanted hair from the deceased’s body is not recommended in accordance with Islamic practice.
